Owls experience difficult times in winter. Do you think they simply sleep or rest in the warmth of their tree hollow? Well, you’re mistaken. Indeed, you won’t see an owl in the forest during the day. An owl only emerges at dusk, but then it really has a lot of work to do. It must have excellent vision and hearing, and be able to fly silently through the forest.

From its perch, it keenly observes rustling sounds, which allows it to hunt for the best food. And since mice, voles, and frogs are known to sleep in winter, the owl must wait until it manages to catch a bird. And that can take a lot of time.

Owls often live alone, and so it is with Jonathan the owl, whom I will tell you about. Jonathan built his nest on the highest rock in the area, behind a large birch tree. The Eurasian Eagle-Owl is a large owl and must build its nest on the ground, as no branch could support its weight.

On Christmas Eve, Jonathan flew to the forest in the early evening as usual. This time, however, he was not looking for food, his stomach was still full from the previous day. He looked around at the colorful fruits forgotten on the tree and at the pretty colorful leaves that still remained here and there on the branches, where the wind had not yet blown them away. Everything he liked, he gathered in his beak and brought to his nest. When there was a sizable pile, Jonathan began to scatter around the nest fruits of rosehips, rowan berries, and colorful leaves.

It was like a real Christmas decoration. He looked sentimentally at his work. Throughout the Christmas Eve night, Jonathan sat in his decorated nest, listening to birds chirping carols nearby, happy and content. And you know what? He didn’t feel lonely at all, for around him was a beautiful, festive atmosphere, and the sky was full of stars shining for his pleasure.
