It’s a tale of anticipation, dedication, and the unending quest to fulfill one’s biggest aspirations.

The first step in preparing for the GREAT EXPEDITION had just been taken. A backpack, not just any ordinary one, but made of special material with reinforced sides, ready for any adventure, appeared in the closet.

It was essential because the expedition was a grand dream. The kind you think about all day long and can’t wait to experience. Becoming a pilot, learning Spanish, switching to a better job, opening a bakery, or simply learning to dance the tango. Everyone has their big dream. And it’s well known that each dream requires proper preparation.

Such a BIG DREAM demands thorough planning. The backpack understood this well, being a specialist in the matter. Spacious yet light, it had comfortable, adjustable straps, a special frame to sit well on the back, numerous compartments and pockets, and very sturdy clasps. This assured that everything would fit.

Many people think you can just head out on an expedition without much thought. They’re wrong and surely regret it later. After all, during a great expedition, one can easily get lost. The route needs to be planned down to the smallest detail and all possibilities checked – the backpack reminded itself.

Thankfully, soon a beautiful, foldable map and a compass arrived to help. They immediately went into the top pocket, and in the following days, they marked places to visit and searched for the best routes between them. The backpack felt much better. Still, other details needed refining.

What if one had to walk in the dark? Initially, it seemed like no big deal. The backpack had reflective patches on the back and sides. When a car approached, it would be spotted in time. But the more it thought about it, the more it felt insufficient. A flashlight, which found its place in a side pocket, solved the issue. Light yet made of hard, durable material, it provided strong light. Waiting those few weeks to choose the best one was worth it.

And what about rain? It knew its material was supposed to be water-resistant. But rain can be heavy, there might be downpours or even storms. It decided an umbrella and a special material cover were necessary. Finding ones that really fit well was not easy. Weeks turned into months searching for them, but they were eventually found, and preparations could continue.

As winter approached with its potential cold and snow, it wasn’t the right time for an expedition. Such a dream should be pursued only at the IDEAL moment. „These few months will fly by in no time,” it reassured itself. Indeed, a beautiful spring came, and final plan adjustments and preparations resumed.

The backpack started to realize there were many more things to take. It began to worry if it would be too heavy and uncomfortable. Straps could dig into shoulders. Would the belts hold at the top and bottom without overly straining the back? It started reading about the best materials for frames and the possibilities of replacing them. All this took time, but it wasn’t wasted.

Meanwhile, more items arrived in the closet. A sturdy raincoat and sleeping bag, a thermos, a travel set of plates, a fork and spoon. Just choosing the right Swiss army knife took weeks. All these were essential for the expedition. More items appeared, whose purposes were unclear. At one point, someone put something resembling an inverted backpack – a set of harnesses for carrying something or someone in front, not on the back.

The next summer brought intense heat. That’s when it decided special creams with SPF, deodorant, and sunglasses were needed. Properly assembling a first-aid kit was a significant challenge. All this took time, but it kept reminding itself that it’s better to be fully prepared than to regret it later and was proud of its foresight.

Then, someone placed a small bike with additional wheels and more items in the closet, more suitable for children’s play than a great expedition. Caught up in preparations, it hardly had time to examine them. It sometimes felt the list of tasks was growing, not shrinking.

One night, it had a beautiful dream. It dreamt of gently swaying side to side, gliding through a sunlit forest. The clean air and fresh scent of pine filled it completely. It felt so light, as if about to ascend towards the clouds. Soon, it indeed rose and saw the forest, a river, and a country road from a bird’s-eye view. Breezes gently played with its flap and softly tapped its clasps. It felt happy and free.

The next morning, it returned to preparations. There were so many matters to address, so many items to gather, so many topics to ponder. Setting off without them would be irresponsible! Yes, IRRESPONSIBLE – if it wrote that, it would use capital letters, perhaps even underline it. After all, it was a proper backpack, aware of the importance of good preparation.

Years passed, and more items kept appearing in the closet. It was starting to get a bit cramped. Some of the new items excited it, potentially useful for the great expedition, but many were puzzling. What use were woolen socks and warm slippers?

One day, the closet was so full, it was time for a major cleanup. That day, someone took it out and carried it to the attic. The backpack rationalized that it was probably better this way. There was more room for things here. And the bit of dust gathered here and there could easily be wiped off, restoring it to new?

Years passed without anyone looking at it. The backpack lost track of time, not knowing whether it was winter or summer. It spent less time on preparations and more just resting. It slept a lot, hoping for that wonderful dream to return.

One day, it was suddenly awakened from its lethargy by noise and a tug.

„Grandma! You have a nearly new backpack here!” it heard the laughter of young voices.

The sunlight blinding it made it unsure whether the tears welling up were from the bright light or the swirling dust in the air.
