Enjoy one of our new bedtime stories for kids. We present you another bedtime story about Amelie.
When Mother told Amelie it was bedtime, the little girl wasn’t too pleased. She was just finishing playing with her favorite dolls. A party was happening in the pink dollhouse. Susanna and Miley, dressed in their finest ball gowns, sat at a table set for dinner. Susanna, as usual, sat a bit aside and slanted on her chair. She had beautiful blonde hair and that lovely blue dress. Miley– upright and beaming, wore a pink dress and ballet shoes. But now, it had to be interrupted…
Amelie sighed and went to the bathroom to wash up. A few minutes later, dressed in her heart-patterned pajamas, she was already lying in bed. Mom kissed her goodnight and left, turning off the light in the room. The girl yawned and stretched under the blanket. She was warm and comfortable in her little bed.
Despite the lights being off, the room wasn’t dark. Through the window, which was right next to the bed, strong moonlight poured in. The night was full of stars and bright. So bright that, although Amelie was quite sleepy, she sat up in bed and looked out the window.
She began to watch the starry sky. It was incredible… Thousands of stars twinkled in every corner. At first, they seemed similar, but when she squinted, everything looked different. Some stars seemed to sway and turn very slowly. Others had a bluish glow and were completely still. Others dimmed momentarily, only to shine brightly again. If you closed your eyes and held your breath, you could hear their twinkling. It was like soft bells, heard from afar, turning and swaying in a gentle breeze.
The moon was also there, in all its glory. It shone so brightly that Amelie had to squint her eyes while looking at it. The spots on it resembled the shape of a magical carriage, like the one in a fairy tale her mother had read to her at bedtime. This carriage, drawn by four white horses, seemed to barely and very quietly touch the road. The prince who rode it traveled the world, looking for a girl to become his wife. A princess with whom he would live in a beautiful castle and, surely, live happily ever after.
Amelie daydreamed while watching the moon and its incredible shapes. Snuggled under the warm blanket, she sat in her bed. She was very sleepy, and her eyes began to close slowly. But outside, in the beautiful moonlight, much was still happening.
Amelie saw one of the stars – larger but a bit darker than the others – begin to descend. Lower and lower… At first, it seemed impossible, but soon the girl was certain. The star was falling. It happened very slowly, but clearly enough to be sure. It wasn’t just descending, but also seemed to enlarge and approach. Now Amelie saw it very clearly – a group of nymphs, fluttering their wings, flying up to her window.
Amelie wasn’t sure if the nymphs came specifically for her or if it was just a coincidence. Just in case, she burrowed deeper under the blanket and waited motionlessly. The nymphs flew into the garden right below the girl’s window. Now, in the moonlight, she saw them very clearly. They were beautiful girls dressed in lacy dresses. Each had wings on their backs – as delicate as if made of muslin. All looked quite similar, but upon closer inspection, differences were evident. Amelie really wanted to count them. It wasn’t easy because they held hands and spun in a circle.
One… Two… The nymphs turned so Amelie could clearly see one of them. Her long blond hair flowed over her shoulders, waving and swaying. Her lace dress had simple floral patterns of petals and leaves. The dress reached her knees, and on her feet, she wore white socks and light shoes with small heels. The nymph gracefully fluttered her wings.
Three… Four… The dance of the nymphs slowed a bit and became more swaying. Now it seemed that the nymphs not only danced but also sang. The girl heard through the window only a faint melody and couldn’t hear any words. To hear better, Amelie closed her eyes and started listening to the silence outside. Sometimes she heard the melody of a waltz – the kind of music heard only at grand balls at a prince and princess’s palace.
Five… Six… Amelie wasn’t sure if she was counting the dancing nymphs correctly. They kept spinning in their dance, and the girl, with her eyes half-closed and so sleepy, wasn’t paying much attention anymore. One nymph lightly hopped, and her dress rippled in the dance. It seemed for a moment as if she saw Amelie and smiled at her gently.
Seven… Eight… The girl lay down completely in her warm bed and snuggled into her pillow. Looking up and slightly behind her, she could still see the window and the brightness of the night. Outside, the nymphs swayed and circled in their dance. The girl felt as if their slight shadows sometimes peeked into the room, and the music continued softly, distantly.
Nine… Ten… The pillow was soft, and the blanket so warm. Amelie thought of the prince in the carriage on the moon… Of the nymphs dancing outside the window… Of the falling and twinkling stars… And she felt that tonight she would have a fantastic dream. Something about nymphs and a prince… A dream she could tell her mom about in the morning. And as she would tell it, they would laugh and cuddle together…
She felt sleep approaching and that it was about to begin. It would be a wonderful night and a wonderful dream. She snuggled even more into the pillow… Took a deep breath… And fell deeply asleep…
